Thriller Sub-Genres


Crime Thriller -  focuses on crime, physical action and the police collecting evidence to discover criminals. E.g. 21 (2008),  Fast & Furious 5 (2011), and Side Effects (2013)


Mystery Thriller -  A much more fast paced mystery, the protagonist on the  run and the threat of another crime serving as the “ticking clock”. E.g. The Girl on the Train (2016), Gone Girl (2014), and Jack Reacher (2012).


Supernatural Thriller – The plot line similar to thrillers however otherworldly elements are introduced: some characters may have psychic abilities. E.g.  The Sixth Sense (1999), Don’t Look Now (1973), The Devil's backbone (2001).

Psychological Thriller – Mental conflict is seen rather than physical, where a protagonist is involved in a tricky situation threatening their sanity. They must use mental prowess to overcome this fight. E.G. Pyscho (1960), Seven (1995), The Silence of The Lambs (1991).
