Psychological Thriller Storylines.

A typical storyline of a psychological thriller will put emphasis on the unstable psychological states of the characters within it, dealing with moral ambiguity and tortured mental frames of mind resulting in obsessive and pathological behaviours.  Examples of films featuring characters facing such inner turmoil include- The Black Swan, Shutter Island and Fight Club. A distinguishing characteristic of a psychological thriller is a marked emphasis on the mental states of its characters: their perceptions, thoughts, distortions, and general struggle to grasp reality. Most commonly, the plot of psychological thriller will follow  one particular person and the events that happen to them as they slowly loose their grasp on reality. The end of the film also quite commonly include a huge twist, usually that the character being focused on realising that the reality of the situation is a figment of their imagination or not as they believed (for instance, Edward Daniels from Shutter Island realising he is not a U.S Marshall but a patient in a mental asylum, recovering from a damaging past.)

Psychological thrillers are suspenseful and filled with tension, by exploiting uncertainty over characters' motives, honesty, and how they see the world. This genre of film can also cause a feeling discomfort in audiences by allowing them  the information that they wish to share with the characters who are unaware of the truth; guilty characters may suffer similar distress by virtue of their knowledge. In addition, characters will usually display an on-going battle between themselves and their own minds, sometimes taking the form of an alter ego, such as in Fight Club. They may find it difficult to distinguish what is real, who they are, and what life's purpose is. Common elements may include detectives and cold, maniplulating characters such as serial killers or deviants of society, who begin to influence each other, such as in Fight Club and Silence of the Lambs.
