Camerawork / Cinematography of Psychological Thrillers

Lighting
  • Low- Key lighting is commonly used in Psychological thrillers, connoting, darkness, evil, fear, and the unknown, good for introducing tense scenes, creating a dramatic effect. This can enhance the fear of both the character and the audience.
  • The balance of Light and dark is explored a lot in psychological thrillers, connoting how a character is fighting against the darkness, creating meaning and depth, making the audience interact with the character.
  • Many shots in psychological thriller use light and dark together, this done by creating shadows on a face, the dark suggesting the darkness is consuming them, whilst the light is still showing their facial expressions.

Camerawork / Cinematography
  • The mid shot and the close up are the most common shots in a psychological thriller. These are used to help the audience relate to the character as they can clearly see the emotion on the characters face and the tension they feel. This realistic take to the film makes the scenes more tense and scary.
  • Flashbacks are commonly used in Psychological thrillers, sometimes these shots can be blurred or over exposed to help the audience identify these scenes are not of those from the current time in the film and are more dream like and hazy. These give an insight to a characters past history, helping to explain why the character is the way they are.
  • Black and white is commonly used in psychological thrillers due to the emphasis and definition of the dark and sharp shadows, the use of low key lighting giving an eerie and mysterious effect.
