Iconography of Pyschological thriller's

Shadows
  • Shadows generally build up the fear and tension in an audience due to the imagination wondering what could be potentially lurking in the shadows and adding the mysterious mood to a psychological thriller.

Confined areas
  • This confined space makes the audience feel nervous and agitated playing on their fears. This trapping of the protagonist also lead the audience to feel as though they cannot escape either. Claustrophobia affects many people, and psychological thrillers use this to their advantage playing mind games with the audience.

Knifes
  • A typical symbol associated with pyschological thrillers connoting death, blood and pain. Knives are often used to show someone is going to be killed or tortured, engaging and frightening the audience.
Running Water
  • This can be used as a symbol of death, suggesting the draining of life or is commonly associated with blood dripping, suggesting that a character is in danger. This ordinary action put into an unordinary enviroment where it is seen as sinister can also break the boundary of comfort for the audience.
Street lights
  • These can emphasise the protagonist showing there is almost complete darkness surrounding them, the streetlight being their only guide. This sense of the protagonist being alone in the dark also creates fear for the audience on their behalf as they look vulnerable and the shadows of darkness creates a tense atmosphere.
