Settings / Locations of Psychological Thriller's

The House

  • Used to portray a characters life, where they live, what they own, their lifestyle, hobbies and interests.
  • This would usually show change as the characters emotional and psychological state, the house becoming more messy or the change of objects in their place of comfort, not of which the character would've chosen to have in their house before their change of mood.
Location / Setting

  • This is where the nasty events begin to happen or where the event of a characters first trauma originated from.
  • These locations are usually dark, isolated places. For example; a lake, a forest, a house. Maybe where the character used to play as a child.
  • This is usually used to build an atmosphere of darkness haunting the character internally as the location outlines and foreshadows events which might happen in the future.
  • Setting can show how the character is progressing to overcome their troubled throughout the film.
  • Cities can commonly be used to show the characters emotional state, creating a chlostrophobic mood, or a sense of no escape (trapped) or confusion.
  • Feelings and mood can also be supported by the use of pathetic fallacy in the weather; a storm representing something bad arriving, the rain representing sadness, the sun shining representing happiness.
